Beware: Over-Spending on Sales

Updated on August 19, 2011

Most of us have come across the deal that was to good to pass up a time or two in our lives. There you are, walking through the supermarket and your favorite dessert has the bright sign above it, indicating that it is on sale, your eye is instantly drawn to the price that is listed, and you see that it is $1.50 cheaper than the store down the road that always seemsĀ  to sell it for less, then you find that you just have to have it and it finds its way into your cart. Frequently sales, coupons, and advertisements will entices people to buy thing that they do not need, would not normally buy, or cause them to buy more of the products, that they were going to buy, than they can reasonable use. By doing so, these sales can get people to spend more money than they would otherwise, or at least waste the money that they spend by having to throw product away.

Sales and coupons can save an educated buyer quite a bit of money on everyday spending, such as the grocery bill and house hold items. I frequently take advantage of sales on products that I use. People work hard for their money and should try a make it go as far as possible when buying the products they use. There are a couple of things to watch out for when trying to save money at your local stores.

Emotional Ad Spending

Ads and sales are designed to get people to buy there products. saving money while shopping For many people it can become a game or coping mechanism, giving the shopper a rush or satisfied feeling after getting the good deal on what ever product they just bought. Buying products for an emotional fix becomes expensive very fast, though the buyer may have saved $20 on a pair of shoes, they still spend $30 that they would not have spent otherwise.

The more frequently a person find themselves emotional sale hunting the more money they began to waste. For some people this can be a very challenging habit to overcome and can lead to financial troubles, hording, and cause family/relationship problems if left unchecked. The easiest way to overcome the emotional sale trap is to stay away from it all together. It is far easier to prevent compulsive habits than to overcome them. If you do find yourself hunting for the best deals out there to meet some sort of emotional need, and can not stop. Just know that there is no reason to be ashamed of seeking professional help with what ever problems may be causing it. This is something your local counselor or psychologist could help you with. It does not mean that you are crazy if you seek help, many counselors specialize in finding the root cause to compulsive behaviors and many people have compulsive problems and are able to get help for them.

The Sale Hype

Often times people will go to the market with out a clear sense of what they need, or they know that they need some specific items and leave room to buy whatever they find on sale. This sort of spending can cause people to fall into the sale hype trap and spend a lot more money than they need or want to. Seeing the bright colored signs that have the prices listed next to each other so you can see the amount you can save is often very enticing and may cause an unprepared buyer to purchase a number of items that they may not need or could get by with a cheaper product. The best defense against this kind of over spending is to always be prepared when shopping, know what you need, find the best deals to meet your needs, and then get out.

Sales and coupons can be a great way to save some extra cash even without going to the extremes in hunting down coupons. A shopper should keep in mind that saving money on products that you would not normally buy, or that you do not need, is really just overspending. So when you are shopping and money is a concern make sure that you plan ahead. and are prepared to turn down the good deals that will get you to spend more than you should. The most effective way to save money is always good planing. Know what you need and what you can do with out.
